After the success of our last op shop trip, yesterday we gave it another run. This time it was the Salvos store at Tempe, next to the currently-being-constructed Ikea store (can’t wait til that’s finished – imagine being able to browse retro-chic followed by Swedish design, with your choice of car park sausage sizzle, or production line hot dogs. Fantastic. Or is that just me?). I didn’t think it’d be possible to top the lawn bowls I found last time, but how wrong I was.
I give you The Batman Game. Made in 1966 and based on the TV series starring Adam West, the aim of the game is to use the Batmobile to capture six different villains. So The Joker, The Penguin and The Riddler are all there, as is Mr Zero (yeah, this thing is so old it’s before they renamed him Mr Freeze). Making up the numbers are The Blockbuster and The Calendar Man – I had to look those two up:
Julian Gregory Day, better known as Calendar Man, is known for committing crimes that corresponded with holidays and significant dates. He often wears costumes to correlate with the date of the designated crime. Because his crimes are generally petty and often ridiculous in nature, he is notorious among both heroes and villains alike for being something of a joke.
I hope Chris Nolan can find a place for him in The Dark Knight Rises.
I was very excited to find that all the game pieces were intact (also in the box, for some reason, a complete set of Monopoly money, houses, cards and tokens – anyone got a spare board?). I managed to convince Holly to ignore the recommended 8 to 15 age range and play one round with me this afternoon, and it actually played pretty well. Could do with a few KA-POW sound effects perhaps. Or some shark repellent.
