Folks, it’s time to blow the digital dust off this blog, because we have left the country. And if the photo of the Brandenburg Gate, and the name of this post don’t make it clear enough, we are in Germany.
After a week of 30°C days in Sydney just before we left, arriving in the cold of winter here was a bit of a shock. But it was nothing a mug or two of glühwein couldn’t fix, and since at this time of year you can barely walk a block in Berlin without stumbling over a Christmas market, das glühwein did flow. As did basically one of every food item the markets offered (a highlight being flame grilled salmon on a roll).
Other than eating and drinking, we visited the DDR Museum, checked out a VW design exhibition, and ventured out to a fresh produce market in Kreuzberg. Ok, so that did involve some eating too, but how could we say no to excellent spätzle?
We also managed to get spots to climb the dome on top of the Reichstag Building, the German parliament house. It was a wet and miserable afternoon, so the views weren’t the best, but the structure itself is very impressive to check out anyway. Holly would have preferred to be looking inside the building rather than being on top of it, but she did get a pocket sized German constituion on her way out, so not a total loss. A tip for those coming to Berlin in the future: reservations on the website get booked out super far in advance, but you can secure tickets in person at the ticket booth the day before (or even on the day if you get there early enough). Just make sure you take the passports for everyone who wants a spot, and then you too can admire the TARDIS-like interior…
